Lambs

15th March 2019 By Peter Hussey

The worst possible weather for newly born lambs is rain driven by high winds, and that is exactly what we have just now.  Lowland lambs are possibly a couple of months old by now, but mountain lambs are often not born until May, Here in the valley we are between the two, and new lambs […]

Fabulous February

3rd March 2019 By Peter Hussey

… and then, straight after we posted “Forlorn February” the weather changed totally and the skies were blue! It was cold in the mornings but there was real heat in the sun and it was half term week so lots of children were able to experience the Valley in warm sunshine!  Of course, underlying the […]

Forlorn February

12th February 2019 By Peter Hussey

Yes February can seem something of a forlorn month, there is plenty of rain and drizzle and not a lot of sun, so what would you find on a little saunter no more than a few hundred yards from the Cottage?  Sheer magic, if you look for it!

Powys, climate breakdown and zero carbon

26th January 2019 By Peter Hussey

The Welsh Government accepted that all decisions that it makes have to be in line with the concept of the welfare of future generations. This makes Wales probably the most progressive of all the home nations certainly far more so than the UK Government where all decisions can be overridden by the needs of security […]

Uncover the Secrets of Dol Y Mynach

4th December 2018 By Peter Hussey

Re-posted from the Elan Valley news website Dol y Mynach is often underappreciated and many visitors leave Elan without ever knowing its important role. The dam holds back water that has been released from the Claerwen dam down the river in a small reservoir, which is linked to a tunnel that flows straight through the […]

Remember, remember ….

9th November 2018 By Peter Hussey

The annual Elan Village Bonfire, which takes place right outside our house, was spectacular this year.  An old shed at the Sawmills had collapsed and the wood from it, along with a considerable quantity of pallets had been donated for the fire. The weather was favourable , there was a lot of rain on the […]

Garden Coffee Morning

31st July 2018 By Peter Hussey

This Saturday, 4th August, we will be holding the fourth of our coffee mornings in aid of the Bracken Trust.  The Trust is the Llandrindod based charity providing support and treatments for people with cancer.  It is a brilliant operation that has helped cancer suffers and their families throughout mid Wales, including Maggie […]

  • Lockdown 2

The Welsh Government, recognising the dangerous situation created by the Covid pandemic’s second phase, have closed down the country for a two week period. We are therefore not able to welcome any visitors for the period 24th October to the 10th November. We feel much safer because of this action. Like all other places of […]
  • After lockdown

It was safe for us to travel more than 5 miles, the Welsh Government told us, and we set off for a quick visit to our family. As we left the valley, quite early in the morning, our mouths gaped. What was going on? A stream of cars driving in the opposite direction to us. […]
  • Lock down

Well, here we are, after over 100 days we are told that everything is OK out there and we can travel more than the five miles that we have been restricted to.  So tomorrow we will poke our noses out, and rather against my better judgement make an expedition to Carmarthen.  Maggie wants new towels […]
  • Village Lighting

The Elan Valley became the first privately owned landscape to become part of the Dark Skies initiative.  The area was well served as a natural area that could look up to a sky not too badly affected by light pollution.  To make it even better our village lighting was changed.  The old sulfurous lighting was […]
  • Coffee morning for the Bracken Trust at Ty Olaf, 3rd August 2019

What a brilliantly successful day!  The culmination of two months of preparation and hard work.  For Peter and Maggie Hussey, owners of Ty Olaf, it coincides with the harvesting of fruit from the garden, jam making and post Mid Summer hedge and garden tidying and pruning.  For the Bracken Trust Social Committee it is […]
