We had a lovely week in Ty Olaf. The cottage is very well equipped and comfortable. Maggie gave us such a warm welcome and we thoroughly enjoyed the plate of welsh cakes and Peter’s delicious bread and home made marmalade. We had a busy week! We enjoyed exploring the dams, 34 years after our first visit to this area, both during the day and the night! The starry skies are magical and our forays up to the dams at midnight for my husband to take photographs, were a highlight of our week! The walk around Garreg Ddu was beautiful with many stunning views. We enjoyed fish and chips at Evans Plaice, dinner at the Triangle, recommended by Peter and Maggie, lunch at the Old Swan Tearooms, all of these just down the road in Rhayader. Further afield, we revisited Devil’s Bridge and had a delicious lunch at the Hafod Arms, before driving to Nant y Moch and back over the mountain road to the Elan valley and our cosy cottage. We went to Llanidloes twice, once on our only day of rain, when we drove to Llyn Clywedog and then onto the Hafren forest. We were lucky to be able to return later in the week in the sunshine. We loved the beautiful and well-marked trails through the forest – equally enjoyable in the wet and the dry. We also visited the Cycle Museum in Llandrindod Wells – don’t miss lunch overlooking the lake at the Lakeside Restaurant – and we then drove onto Warren Wood where we ventured into a ‘prehistoric looking’ gorge to find ‘Water Break its Neck’. On our final day, we walked up above Caban Coch and we promised ourselves it will not be another 34 years before we return! Thank you Peter and Maggie for making us feel so welcome – we hope to be back soon!

The cottage was absolutely superb, very well thought out for our party of 2 adults/2 children. The garage/studio was really useful for storing our bicycles as well as admiring Peter’s paintings! We were really taken aback with Peter & Maggie’s hospitality, from the afternoon tea laid out for our arrival (including home made jam!) to their suggestions based on local knowledge and in addition the facilities at the cottage were great. The wood burner was so cosy to relax in front of in the evening – almost too hot! There is so much to do in the area – the Elan cycle trails, plenty of scenic walks (info all provided in the cottage) and excursions to Devil’s Bridge (beautiful drive) & the National Cycle Collection were our favourites. From the door, there are lovely walks ideal for an evening stroll. An evening “night time” cycle ride along the bike track to the super local pub in Rhayader was the highlight of our great week! Absoutely wonderful place, fabulous location and beautiful accommodation with such a warm welcome – we didn’t want to leave! Thank you so much Maggie and Peter for a little taste of heaven the way only Wales can do it.

Ty Olaf is a wonderful holiday cottage, located in a spectacular part of Wales. The cottage is extremely well appointed & equipped & our welcome from owners Peter & Maggie was second-to-none. We’ve stayed in self-catering cottages all over the UK & can’t recall another occasion when we’ve had such a lovely welcome pack ….of particular note was the fabulous home made bread & jam, & the freshly made plate of Welsh-cakes! We enjoy walking & managed some superb walks in the Elan Valley – the countryside really is stunning. We can highly recommend Ty Olaf & the whole area as a lovely destination for walkers & nature-lovers – & anyone wanting a totally restful, relaxing, recuperative break!

Splendid accommodation in a tranquil location. Finished to an extremely high standard. Maggie and Peter were wonderful hosts. Shame we couldn’t stay longer.

If it is peace, tranquillity, fabulous accommodation, access to beautiful picturesque walks and a welcome warmer than the Sahara then look no more. It is all here in one great package. We needed to chill and relaxation started the minute Peter opened the gate for us. Thank you so much Maggie & Peter

The cottage at Ty-Olaf is beautiful and the setting in the Elan Valley is magical with the river running near by and the sheep peacefully grazing in the valley. Not far away is Cigrin farm where daily at 3-30pm the Red Kites are fed. The aerobatic display by these fantastic birds is an amazing spectacle and would put The Red Arrows display team to shame.
Peter & Maggie are such wonderful hosts with a welcome so warm that we will remember forever.
David Smith — July 29, 2010
The scenery was stunning, the cottage beautiful and the welcome warm – we had a lovely few days relaxing in the Elan Valley. Enjoyed bracing walks around the dam and surrounding countryside. Plenty of activities in the area including red kite feeding and the narrow gauge railway to Aberystwyth. It was lovely to come back to the cottage and relax at the end of each day. Thank you Peter and Maggie

Ty Olaf is a little gem in the spectacular Elan Valley. Maggie & Peter are attentive and caring hosts and gave us a very warm welcome. The cottage is built and furnished to a very high standard with much attention to detail. Our short holiday was further enhanced by the wonderful snow and, although it was -17 deg outside, we were very comfortable inside Ty Olaf. This is THE place to stay for exploring the Elan Valley and many walks along the valley and over the hills start just outside the front door.Thank you Maggie & Peter for a fantastic short break. We will be back for a longer holiday.

Previous guests have said it all! This was a perfect holiday for us. The only thing we missed and must come back for is water cascading over the dams! And to capture the Hercules pilot having his/her dambusters moment over Claerwen dam, but I was too slow to capture it! Thank you Maggie and Peter for all your help and suggestions!

Thank you Maggie & Peter for your hospitality, the great cottage, the suggestions for walks, the lovely extra touches – the welsh cakes, the bread, the strawberries! What a fabulous week we have just spent at Ty Olaf. We came for the walking and couldn’t have chosen a better place to stay – so many superb walks are literally straight from the door and after a day on the hills it was lovely to come back to the luxury of lying on the sofa, watching red kites hovering above the woodland outside the living room window. We had such brilliant weather (only drawback was that it was far too hot to light the woodburner – we’ll need to have a winter break next time!).

Yvette and I had a delightful week at Ty Olaf. We discovered a friendly and welcoming sailing club at Clywedog reservoir, which has spectacular scenery. Yvette went horse riding at the “Heart of Wales” riding school at Pen y Bont, which was lovely. The walks to and from Ty Olaf are superb. But saving the best until last Ty Olaf is beautiful and Maggie and Peter made us especially welcome. PS The food at the Elan Valley hotel was very good and a convenient short walk away.

Ty Olaf cottage is a gem set in a beautiful place made very special by Peter and Maggie. I agree with previous comments about the relaxation starting from the minute you are met at the gate by Peter and Maggie. They are passionate about the cottage, the village and the valley and their enthusiasm is infectious. The delicious coffee and walnut cake, Welshcakes milk and butter were a thoughtful touch and ensured the stay was off to a great start! The cottage is absolutely wonderful and a great place to unwind and relax. The weather meant that we could make use of the log burner but the cottage is toasty without it! The area is superb with lots of walks straight from the cottage door, a visit to the Elan hotel for a bite to eat is recommended, the menu offers a good choice and the staff are polite and friendly. The Red Kite feeding at Gigrin farm is a must, the aerial display was superb! A superb relaxing break, we will be coming back again.

Thank you Maggie and Peter for the wonderful hospitality you gave us during our Christmas stay at Ty Olaf. The cottage was very warm and cosy in a beautiful part of the world which we both love. The extra touches and decorations really made a lovey Christmas for us. If we don’t move to the area we will definitely be back and will recommend to others. The area is also very good for a spot of bird watching.
From Mags and Colin, Christmas 2013.
This was our second stay at this wonderful location, beautiful cottage, and Peter and Maggie are just fabulous hosts. Ty Olaf a gem within a gem. Already booked our next stay.

When my wife and I first started visiting Wales it turned into an obsession to find the perfect self catering cottage which would combine our love of fly fishing, bird watching, dark sky observing and cycling all within a relative short distance of each other. Ty Olaf delivers on all fronts, offering first class trout fishing on the Claerwen, Carreg Ddu, Caban Coch and Craig Goch, not to mention the tranquil River Elan which is fed by these amazing reservoirs. A short walk from the door or as little as a 3 minute drive and all this is available to you.
The cycling is equally as stunning, not to mention breathtaking (in more ways than one).
In fact whether it be fishing, cycling, running, walking or just pottering around, Ty Olaf and the Elan valley will deliver. Nothing is too much trouble for Maggie & Peter and you will certainly be well looked after.
We have been coming here for well over 6 years now and I think that tells the story more than any amount of words can.
Matt & Judith.
